Using public property as part of your project

Do you have a project that will require use of public property? You'll need a Work Permit for that. A Work Permit from the District’s Engineering Department is required for any work activity on public property, no matter how big or small. This includes any temporary closure of public access to a vehicle lane of traffic, sidewalk, bike lane, trail, park, service easement, boulevard or other municipal asset in order to offload, store or stage materials for your project including fencing.

What you'll need:

  • Traffic Management Plan
  • $5M liability insurance naming the District as co-insured
  • WorkSafeBC coverage.

The Work Permit process has been in place for a number of years, however given the volume of construction activity in Squamish, the District is looking to maintain orderly compliance on public property that is adjacent to construction sites to ensure public safety and access.

In order to avoid delays caused by unauthorized uses of public property or associated penalties, site managers should make sure that they are aware of where the property lines are on the project site and that an approved Work Permit has been granted for any works or storage on public lands.
