Squamish Celebrates Public Works Week May 19 to 23, 2014

The District of Squamish joins other municipalities across North America in celebrating the 54th annual National Public Works Week (NPWW), and has proclaimed May 19 to 23, 2014 Public Works Week. The theme for 2014 is “Building for today, planning for tomorrow”.

“Public Works Week helps to showcase the people and services that deliver essential services to our community,” says Mayor Rob Kirkham. “The men and women of the Public Works division deliver Squamish’s essential services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to ensure we have clean water when we turn on the tap, or a safe road to drive on, for example. They also work to ensure that our community is a highly livable one complete with well-maintained parks and green space. This week brings focus to their tireless efforts.”

The highly popular annual School Tour is planned from 9:00 a.m to 12:30 p.m. on May 21, 2014 at the District’s Public Works Yard. Here, 230 grade four students from local elementary schools take in all aspects of Public Works. Their tour will take them through 11 different stations exploring everything from how to make a hanging flower basket, to a tour of the wastewater treatment plant, to exploring water conservation, to checking out the vehicle fleet and Fleet Maintenance department. The District will also utilize this program to communicate public works as a possible career choice for the working force of the future.

The Public Works Yard will be open to members of the public in the afternoon of May 21. Tours will be offered at 1:15 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

The District of Squamish is proud to be the recipient of a national Public Works Week award for its 2013 National Public Works Week celebration. The District was honoured by the Canadian Public Works Association with the first place award for municipalities under 75,000.
