District of Squamish achieves Carbon Neutrality

The District of Squamish has been recognized as a Carbon Neutral community by the Province and the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM). The highest Level 4 recognition, Achievement of Carbon Neutrality, was awarded to the District for its continued commitment to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and fulfilling the requirements for carbon neutrality in the 2017 CARIP (Climate Action Revenue Incentive Program) reporting year.

“We have been steadily working towards our commitment to carbon neutrality since we joined municipalities across the province ten years ago in a common pledge to challenge climate change,” says District of Squamish Mayor Patricia Heintzman. “It takes a community to lead the change. Our collaborative efforts in reducing our carbon footprint will continue to benefit our community and our environment, and inspire a future-focused economy.”

The Climate Action Recognition Program acknowledges the progress and efforts being taken by local government leaders as they work to achieve their climate goals.

In 2007, the District of Squamish adopted a 12-step climate action pledge and commissioned the Bridging to the Future report as a milestone first step. In 2008, District of Squamish Council signed the Climate Action Charter with the commitment to measure and report on community GHG emissions, to create energy efficiencies and to become carbon neutral in its corporate operations.

The District continues to address climate change through the recently adopted Official Community Plan, the Community Carbon Marketplace and carbon-reducing initiatives such as car sharing, organics diversion, and the e-bike pilot program.
