Watermain Upgrade Program 2025
The District of Squamish will be upgrading and repairing select watermains as part of the annual watermain upgrade program. Please note the project sites and impacts below.
1) Birken watermain upgrade from Depot Road to the end of Birken Road (north):
Replacement of the existing AC watermain originally installed in 1966 using open trench installation.
- Budget: $900,000
- Impacts: Single lane traffic, dust/noise, traffic delays.
2) Powerhouse Chlorination Chamber Replacement: Replacement of the aging existing chamber, which is confined space entry for Public Works staff, with a new above ground kiosk.
- Budget: $750,000
- Schedule: late summer/fall 2025 start
- Impacts: Increased traffic on Powerhouse Springs Road for contractors accessing the site during construction.
3) Bill’s Place Watermain Connection & PRV: Installation of a new water main that will connect Bill’s Place to Highlands Way South and install a new PRV Station on Highlands Way South to ensure stable pressure in the water system. This project will be the final piece required to deliver industrial level fire flows to the Mamquam East Industrial Zone, fulfilling a promise made by the previous council. Construction is scheduled for summer 2025

April 15-18 Vegetation Removal (now complete)

May 20: Construction begins starting near Highlands Way South and working up the slope toward Bill’s Place (anticipated duration summer 2025)

- Impacts:
- Removal of vegetation/trees along the utility right of way from Bill’s Place to Highlands Way South (including one mature tree at the base of the slope). Vegetation cover will be re-established after project completion.
- Some traffic impacts on Highlands Way South – single lane alternating during peak construction.
- Closure of Bill’s Place – Highlands Way South informal pedestrian connector trail.
- Vibration and noise from the construction site during construction.
