Estuary Gates Open to Allow Greater Flow

In response to recent environmental concerns over low water levels in the Squamish Estuary between the end of Third Avenue and Vancouver Street (an area known as the 'bridge pond'), operation of the flood gates now allow for greater tidal flow into these estuarine channels.

est

District of Squamish staff, in collaboration with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, have examined the automated functioning of the Third Avenue flood gates and have adapted the operation of the gates to allow for greater flow.

The gates will remain open unless closure is required for flood control reasons in high tide and or rain events. Residents can expect to see greater tidal flows and an increase in estuary habitat value in this area. Such greater flows are not a cause for alarm; the area is being affected by the tides and is not flooding. The District appreciates the interest of local residents for bringing this concern to our attention!

Questions can be emailed to Rod Macleod or by phone at 604.848.4251.
