Mayor Karen Elliott appointed to BC Transit Board of Directors

The Province of British Columbia Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has appointed District of Squamish Mayor Karen Elliott to BC Transit’s board of directors. Elliott is one of four new members, joining three continuing members. The board of directors supervise the management of BC Transit and appoint the chief executive officer.

“Transit and regional connectivity has a profound importance to small and medium-sized communities across the province as they work to provide citizens with transportation alternatives and choices, and I’m honoured to be able to bring this perspective to the board and work with my colleagues to help affect BC Transit’s policy and direction at a strategic level,” says Elliott.

The seven-member board must be comprised of: two individuals who are members of the regional transit commission for the greater Victoria metropolitan area; two individuals who are either a mayor of a municipality or a chair of a regional district that has a transit service agreement, and three other individuals. Also named to the board with Elliott are: Lyn Hall, mayor of Prince George, Lisa Helps, mayor of Victoria and member of the Victoria Regional Transit Commission, and Blair Redlin.

Squamish, along with its Sea to Sky neighbours Líl’wat Nation, Resort Municipality of Whistler, Squamish Nation, Squamish-Lillooet Regional District and Village of Pemberton have been working towards the introduction of regional transit to improve community connectivity, access to work and health care, allow more flexibility with housing choices, reduce greenhouse gases and reduce traffic congestion.

“While my new role won’t directly influence regional transit in this Corridor, I look forward to having a voice to represent the interests of all communities who view transit expansion as a significant component of the liveability of their regions and communities,” continues Elliott. “There is so much opportunity to help further BC Transit’s goals and those of communities across the province.”
