Public call for submissions announced for District of Squamish Street Banner Project

Would you like to see your artwork on the streets of Squamish? The District of Squamish Public Art Select Committee has announced the Squamish 2016 Street Banner Project which will see a series of artist-designed banners on street lampposts located in Downtown Squamish, Garibaldi Estates and Brennan Park Recreation Centre. A public call for submissions was launched today and is open only to artists who currently live in Squamish. The deadline for submissions is February 22, 2016.

“We’re looking for banner submissions that are both unique in design and that celebrate Squamish's vibrant spirit and brand positioning,” says Anna Lippman, Vice Chair of the Public Art Select Committee. “The Street Banner Project is a great opportunity to showcase local art throughout the town and help visitors gain a sense of our community.”

This is the second public call for submissions launched by the newly formed Public Art Select Committee, a committee comprised of local artists and residents with a connection to the art community. The committee launched its first submissions call last November for the Connecting Squamish Neighbourhoods project which will see two or more permanent public art installations within Squamish. Submissions for the project, which closed today, are currently being reviewed by the committee for selection.

Submissions for the Squamish 2016 Street Banner project will be evaluated by members of the Public Art Select Committee and will be judged based on originality, character and artistic merit. Four banner designs will be chosen for the project from either one or multiple artists. Shortlisted artists are expected to present their ideas to the committee in early March.
