A New Transit Route for Squamish

The District of Squamish and BC Transit are pleased to announce a service improvement introduced October 15, 2013. Nearly 2,000 service hours and an extra bus have been added to the Squamish Transit System. A new route, Route #4 Tantalus, will connect the Tantalus neighbourhood and Highlands Mall to downtown Squamish during weekday peak periods.

“Transit helps build strong and safe communities, by providing affordable and reliable transportation options for families, residents, students and seniors,” said MLA Jordan Sturdy. “This service expansion and new route will improve transit service in Squamish and encourage more people to take the bus.”

The changes to the transit schedule are designed to meet the needs of the community. Those needs were expressed during an extensive public consultation period in October 2012.

“We’ve made a significant investment in transit which is a reflection of recognizing how important transit is to this community,” says District of Squamish Mayor Rob Kirkham. “It was a mandate of this Council to improve access to transit, and in cooperation with BC Transit we’ve reviewed the routes and schedules to find ways to respond to community need. The introduction of this new commuter route concept is an innovative and welcome addition to our existing service.”

“We are pleased to work with our partners at the District of Squamish to ensure transit service is efficient and effective,” said BC Transit President and CEO Manuel Achadinha. “This latest expansion, combined with the Sunday, holiday and evening service introduced in September, will continue to help grow ridership. In 2012/13 we delivered more than 216,000 passenger trips, an increase of 6% over the previous year”.
