Transgender Pride flag raising at Municipal Hall will honour those who continue to face violence and discrimination

A transgender pride flag will be raised over Municipal Hall in support of Transgender Awareness Week, November 13-20, to help raise the visibility of transgender people and address issues facing members of the transgender community. Transgender Awareness Week occurs annually each year in the week leading up to Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), a day to commemorate the trans, two-spirit and non-binary people who have lost their lives to transphobic violence. A flag raising ceremony will be held outside Municipal Hall on Monday, November 15 at 11 a.m.

“We embrace all members of our community regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, class, caste, religion, belief, sex, language, sexual orientation, identity, age, health or other status, and we will continue to create an inclusive community where all members feel seen, valued, heard and safe,” says District of Squamish Mayor Karen Elliott. “It is heartbreaking to know that there are those who live in our community who continue to face violence and discrimination for being who they are, and we are here to say that we see you, and you are welcome. I hope that we can all take part in this opportunity to learn and advocate for gender inclusivity.”
