Campfire Ban Rescinded - Residential Campfire Permit Required for Backyard Fires

District of Squamish Fire Rescue (SFR) will rescind the campfire ban today, Friday, May 31 at 4 p.m., due to the continued wet conditions in the forecast and with the high compliance rate that has significantly reduced the number of abandoned or unattended campfire complaints within the District of Squamish.

SFR appreciates residents’ efforts on compliance, and recognizes that the municipal regulations can cause confusion when provincial fire regulations differ. For clarity, the provincial fire regulations apply only to Crown land, BC Parks and areas outside of the local government authority.

SFR works closely with our neighbouring communities to ensure that our communities remain safe and the risk of wildfires are mitigated. The provincial wildfire situation and weather conditions before the Victoria Day long weekend were concerning, and a corridor-wide effort was undertaken to preserve resources and reduce the likelihood of human-caused wildfires.

A campfire ban will be considered once again when conditions require.

Residential Campfire Permit Required

The District of Squamish Residential Campfire Permit can only be used on private residential properties with the written permission of the property owner or in designated commercial campgrounds within the District of Squamish boundaries. Fires are never permitted in public areas such as beaches, parks or riverbanks and would still be subject to bylaw enforcement.

Campfire Permit holders are reminded to review the conditions of the campfire permit and ensure that these conditions are met prior to lighting a campfire.

So does this mean that campfires are allowed at the Raffuse creek recreational campground?

Hello, campfires are not allowed at Raffuse Creek Recreation Site. This area is within District of Squamish municipal boundaries and therefore serviced by the municipal fire department. It is considered to be in a public area (park/riverbank) where fires are never permitted. Only campgrounds within the DOS boundaries with a commercial campfire permit (and a business licence) are allowed campfires. Thanks for the question!
