Special Weather Statement In Effect - Heavy Rain Expected Monday/Tuesday

Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for the BC South Coast, with impacts to Howe Sound and Squamish expected. Heavy rain for the South Coast is expected Monday and Tuesday as a "potent and impactful storm (an atmospheric river)" will make landfall on Monday. The statement warns that very heavy rainfall and rain on snow at higher elevations will increase the risk of flooding and landslides. It continues to say that this event is forecast to be much weaker in comparison to the event of November 2021 but please continue to monitor forecasts for the latest information.

A second special weather statement indicates that areas of Metro Vancouver near the water, the southern Gulf Islands, and the Saanich Peninsula may see elevated ocean water levels. Howe Sound is not included in this second alert.

District of Squamish crews are monitoring across the community and addressing problem areas as they arise. It's business as usual as crews work to mitigate against winter storms.

As the winter storm season sets in, this is an excellent time to review personal emergency plans and update emergency grab and go bags.

Sign up for Squamish Alert or Squamish Nation Alert in order to receive direct instructions by text, email or phone call in the event of an emergency situation. This is a free service that is different from the provincial alerts, and provides local, neighbourhood-specific information as needed.

Stay tuned to Environment Canada for ongoing weather updates.
