Squamish’s Queens Way Recycle Depot will close this year; District is exploring options for a new location

The District of Squamish is working to identify a new location for the public Recycle Depot after receiving notice from GFL that the Queens Way depot will close in May. District staff will present a report to Council in the coming weeks to provide options for the continuance of this service and a recommended path forward.

The District’s contract with GFL enables either party to terminate the Recycle Depot service with six months' notice. GFL provided notice to the District on October 31, 2023.

“While we have enjoyed the opportunity to share our space for many years with the community and encourage diversion, on-site space constraints, business requirements and public safety considerations are making this change necessary,” wrote GFL in the notice of closure. “We look forward to supporting the community with a transition of this site to a safer location.”

Recognizing the important role the Recycle Depot plays in supporting diversion of recyclable waste from the landfill, the new solution will strive to meet goals of accessibility, convenience, and safety for residents and visitors. More information will be shared as this project progresses.

Residents can follow along with Council agendas, published on Fridays for the following Tuesday at: https://squamish.civicweb.net/Portal

This is an unsatisfactory outcome that is going to result in inconvenience to residents and significantly more recycling ending up in the garbage. Please provide an update.
