Queens Way manhole replacement project

October 2023 Update:

  • The replacement maintenance holes for Queens Way Lift Station arrived on site last week and were dropped into place using a 35-ton mobile crane. This is a major project milestone and a significant step toward restoring the lift station.
  • In the coming weeks the excavation will be backfilled, sheet piles will be extracted and dewatering will be shut off and removed from site. Some site restoration will occur and the construction footprint will be condensed.
  • Next phase of work requires some internal repairs to the lift station, replacing valves and piping and new relining of the inside of the wet well before the station can be brought back into safe operation.

The construction schedule has been extended until December 2023. This project has experienced delays due to long material lead times, challenging ground conditions, the presence of conflicting third party utilities that needed to be relocated, and additional repairs required inside the lift station to ensure it can be safely be brought back into operation.

Progress to-date:

  • Extensive dewatering system has been installed and is in operation.
  • Sanitary bypass for forcemain and gravity flows has been installed.
  • Sheet piling and excavation for the new manhole is complete.
  • New manhole structures are designed and in fabrication.
  • Base slab has been poured.
  • Lift station has been thoroughly cleaned and inspected.
  • Detailed design for additional lift station repairs is complete.

Construction is underway at Queens Way Lift Station to replace the inlet manhole that collapsed on January 14, 2023. Work consists of bypassing the lift station, sheet piling, excavation and dewatering to a depth of 6 metres below the surface, subgrade preparation, installation of two new inlet manholes to replace the collapsed manhole, backfill, commissioning of new infrastructure and restoration work.

Project Timeline: Construction is currently underway and now is expected to be complete in November 2023.

Impacts: Traffic control measures are currently in place with modified traffic flow on Queens Way and a 30km/hr construction zone speed enforced. Access to Pioneer Way will be closed to all non-local traffic for the duration of the project. The public is advised to take extra caution when travelling down Queens Way due to higher congestion around the construction areas. Please obey all posted traffic control signs.
