Overview
The District will be installing protected bike lanes along Victoria Street from the new Mamquam Blind Channel Pedestrian Bridge at Loggers Lane to Third Avenue. The project will establish a key east-west spine of the Downtown Squamish cycling network making walking, rolling, and cycling on and across Victoria Street safe, comfortable and accessible for people of all ages and abilities.
Background
The District completed an Active Transportation Plan in 2016 that identified a need for improved east-west transportation infrastructure in Downtown to provide a safe network for active transportation users. On February 13, 2023, Council reviewed options for implementing protected bike lanes through Downtown and approved routing the east-west active transportation corridor on Victoria Street. The Report to Council can be found here.
This project will convert 27 existing parking spaces along Victoria Street into protected bike lanes that will link Downtown with the new pedestrian bridge over the Mamquam Blind Channel. The project will also improve safety for all users at intersections by improving sightlines, reducing crossing distances and enhancing accessibility design features.
