Budget E-Town Hall to take place March 12, 2014

District of Squamish Council invites the community to an E-Town Hall meeting to hear a 2014 budget presentation and offer comments/questions to Council. The E-Town Hall will take place Wednesday, March 12 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Council Chambers, or via online streaming. The format of the event will allow for comments and questions to be heard from those in attendance at the meeting, as well as those viewing from home.

“Throughout this budget process we have strived to provide citizens with the opportunity to take in the budget talks and provide comments at a time and place that is convenient for them,” says Squamish Mayor Rob Kirkham. “This E-Town Hall takes that to the next level as we hope to engage many more people than those who are able to attend the meeting in person.”

The E-Town Hall will take place in Council Chambers and will be streamed live at www.squamish.ca. A staff presentation of the budget will be followed by an open question and answer period with Council. Questions and comments will be taken in person from those in the room. Questions and comments can also be submitted electronically or by phone during the meeting. The budget presentation will be posted online for viewers to follow along.

Comments received from those watching from home will be shared real-time with Council and will receive an immediate response during the meeting, while time permits. Comments can be submitted in any one of the following ways during the meeting:

Council is currently considering a 2014 budget increase of 5.1 per cent which represents an approximate property tax increase of 5.76 per cent for an average single family residence and 4.44 per cent for an average business.

“Prior to adoption your Council would like to receive feedback on the complete budget package as previous comments have been focused on individual topics,” continues the Mayor. “We request your feedback on this draft budget in order to allow us to make any last minute changes before adoption. We want to hear from you!”

District staff have prepared a four-page Budget Overview, aiming to provide a snapshot of the 2014 budget.

In addition, the draft five-year Financial Plan, providing a detailed view of the 2014 budget, all service contractions and increases, changes in staffing counts, special projects and capital projects is available at www.squamish.ca/budget
