Designs chosen for Squamish Street Banner Project

The streets of Squamish will soon be lined with bold, brightly coloured interpretations of Howe Sound, Stawamus Chief and the Squamish River thanks to the District of Squamish Street Banner Project. The banners are slated for installation on existing street lights in Downtown Squamish, Garibaldi Estates and Brennan Park Recreation Centre.

“We’d like to thank everyone who submitted a proposal; the artistic talent within our community is impressive,” says Public Art Select Committee member Maciek Walentowicz. “The winning designs represent iconic images of Squamish with striking graphics that will enhance Squamish streetscapes while highlighting the spectacular beauty of our surroundings.”

Squamish-based artists were invited to submit proposals to the Public Art Select Committee for up to five street banner designs that represent Squamish and the community. Squamish resident Sarah Symes was the artist whose designs were selected for the project.

“I chose a colour palette inspired by nature and infused with bright colours typically seen on the gear and clothing of outdoor enthusiasts,” says Symes. “The geometric forms represent not only the powerful energy but also the diversity and complex balance of our landscape.”

The Street Banner Project is one of two public art projects launched by the committee whose mandate is to provide oversight of the District’s Public Art Policy and develop art in public spaces. The Connecting Squamish Neighbourhoods public art project is expected to launch later this year.
