District of Squamish celebrates Local Government Awareness Week
The District of Squamish is joining the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) and other municipalities across British Columbia in celebrating Local Government Awareness Week from May 15 to 21, 2016, in conjunction with National Public Works Week. The goal of the week is to build awareness about the vital role local government plays in the community.
Here are some of the activities being planned:
- Public Works Day: Residents are invited to take a closer look at the District of Squamish’s water and sewer monitoring system, heavy equipment, truck and vehicle fleet, and much more when the Operations Yard opens its doors for its public open house on Thursday, May 19 between 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Guided tours will be available at 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
- Public Works Student Tour: The District of Squamish will once again host approximately 200 grade four students from across Squamish who will learn about all aspects of Public Works. The tour will take them through 12 interactive stations exploring everything from how to make a hanging flower basket to a tour of the waste water treatment plant.
- Trivia Contest: Test your local government knowledge by entering our online trivia contest! The 10-question quiz highlights key pieces of information and initiatives that are currently underway at the District of Squamish. Entries will be received through May 22.
- Mayor for a Day: Squamish Montessori School grade four student Maya Park won this year's contest with her letter stating her desire to have an all-season ice rink, homeless shelters and a place for animals to live forever. Maya will be joined by two Deputy Mayors, Squamish Montessori School grade one student Aliya Gaudin and Brackendale Elementary School grade five student Alex Jones. The winners will be treated to a morning of activities including a visit to Squamish Animal Control, a tour of the Squamish RCMP Detachment, and, of course, a photo in the Mayor's seat.
