DOS to work with Skateboard Community through fair process

The District recently became aware of a skatebowl that is being constructed on District property under University Bridge (Garibaldi Highlands) by the local skateboard community.

We are interested in working with the skateboard community to reach a solution that is in the best interest of everyone involved, and have asked that work be stopped while both parties come together to discuss next steps.

A number of concerns have been raised about the project – primarily based on the fact that permits have not been issued which raises questions as to how it’s being engineered, safety, and whether land-use approvals are in place.

Discussions surrounding items such as liability, maintenance, and engineering/building reviews need to take place, among other items. This is to ensure that the interests of the broader community are protected, including those who would use the skatebowl, as well as the neighbouring residents.

The District has a duty to enforce a fair process, and it is our hope that we can get to a place that will result in a win for everyone involved.
