Environment Canada issues heatwave warning

Environment Canada has issued a heatwave warning for Sunday, June 20 and Monday, June21. 

A special weather statement is in effect for Howe Sound, and describes a short-lived heat wave set to arrive on the South Coast on Father's Day.

Temperatures are expected to be 5 to 10 degrees above seasonal.

Beat the heat with these hot weather tips from Vancouver Coastal Health:

• Wear lightweight, loose fitting, light-coloured clothing to reflect heat and sunlight and protect your skin from the sun before heading outdoors
• Drink plenty of cold, alcohol-free, caffeine-free and sugar-free fluids to stay hydrated
• Stay cool by spending time in air-conditioned spaces or swimming
• Cover windows that receive morning and afternoon sun with drapes and shades 
• Try to avoid exposure to direct sunlight
• Reduce or eliminate strenuous activities
• Children and pets should never be left alone in a parked car where temperatures can rise to dangerously high temperatures within minutes.  

Extreme heat can lead to heat-related illnesses such as sunburn, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat/sun stroke. These illnesses are especially likely to occur in the elderly and people with chronic conditions who are exposed to the heat. For more information on heat-related illness, please call BC HealthLink at 8-1-1.
