Flood protection/pile driving work on the Mamquam Blind Channel
Thanks are being extended to the Downtown community for bearing with the pile driving noise on the Mamquam Blind Channel. Below is some information on the project:
- The District has planned to build an approximate seven kilometre-long sea dike phased over the next 20+ years to provide coastal flood protection for the community. Portions of the dike fronting privately-owned development sites will be built in conjunction with re-development.
- The current work is being completed in conjunction with the Sirocco development, a multi-family residential development involving three condo buildings along the Mamquam Blind Channel. Construction is being funded and managed by the private developer with review by the District and Provincial Inspector of Dikes.
- Approximately 1,200 timber piles are being driven in this section in order to densify the ground and provide seismic resistance in accordance with Provincial standards for the sea dike.
- The work is anticipated to continue through May.
We apologize for the inconvenience of this loud work; it is a necessary part of maintaining a good level of flood protection for the community.
