Men in Motion Strength Training program brings big benefits to the 55+ crowd

SQUAMISH, B.C. - It’s never too late to get into shape. That’s the philosophy behind the Men in Motion Strength Training Program, designed to create new fitness and social opportunities for men 55 years and older. Space is still available in this program, offered Wednesday and Friday mornings at the Squamish Seniors’ Centre. The program is ideal for those who do not otherwise attend traditional fitness classes nor participate in outdoor activities, and is designed to increase participants’ physical and social participation.

The program includes circuit strength training as well as a monthly guest speaker to educate and inform on relevant health and well-being issues.

“We are proud to offer the Men in Motion Strength Training program with support from the Province of British Columbia’s Seniors’ Housing and Support Initiative,” says Tim Hoskin, District of Squamish Director of Recreation Services. “Men in Motion provides a great opportunity for older men to exercise in a fun, supportive setting and learn about maintaining a healthy lifestyle. We are excited about its success to date and look forward to continuing to create healthy living program opportunities that positively impact our community’s active agers”.

The Men in Motion program has made a difference in both the health and well-being of the men who have participated, many of whom have reported improvements in balance, posture and energy levels.

Michael Owen-Evans recently joined the program. “I have benefited from the program by simply becoming a little more active, using many parts of my body that I wasn't previously putting into play,” he says. “I love interacting with others of a similar age group, and "comparing notes" regarding our relative challenges. I have gained knowledge about what sorts of exercises can and should be done to stay mobile.”

Participation in the program is open to men aged 55 years and older for a drop-in fee of $3 or a reduced rate of $2 per class for the entire session. The session is ongoing on Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. The first class is free to try. For more information, please contact the Squamish Seniors’ Centre at 604-848-6898 or in person at 1201 Village Green Way.
