Mixed Waste threshold reduces to 15% beginning September 5

What is Mixed Waste? Mixed Waste is defined as a load of waste that contains recyclable or organic material such as glass, plastic, organics or yard waste.

The current Mixed Waste threshold in the District of Squamish is 20%. This means that if a person drops off waste at the Squamish Landfill containing more than 20% of material that could have been recycled or composted, they would be charged a Mixed Waste Tipping Fee of $325/tonne.

As of September 5, 2018, the Mixed Waste threshold is being reduced from 20% to 15% under the Solid Waste Utility Bylaw. The threshold will be reduced a further 5% each year, until a 5% mixed waste rate is achieved.

Reduce your waste and save money by composting all food scraps and yard waste, sorting your recyclables and looking for products with ‘pure’ packaging, such as glass, that’s easy to recycle.
