One motorhome lost and one damaged in vehicle fire at Municipal Campground

In the early morning hours of September 18, Squamish Fire Rescue crews responded to a motorhome fire at the Municipal Campground. The fire resulted in a total loss for one motorhome, and extensive damage to a second motorhome. The occupants of the two affected units were provided with accommodation through Emergency Social Services volunteers.

Squamish Fire Rescue attended with three fire engines a duty officer and chief officer. The crews extinguished the fire and checked the surrounding areas for spot fires.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Squamish RCMP. District of Squamish staff are working closely with outreach workers at Squamish Helping Hands to support those affected, including the campground renters who were not directly impacted by the fire.

“Our hearts go out to the individuals who have lost their homes in this fire, and I ask the community to rally to help support their needs, as we have seen Squamish do in so many other terrible situations,” says District of Squamish Mayor Karen Elliott. “Squamish has demonstrated over and over again that we care about the wellbeing of our fellow citizens. Our community social service organizations have been working hard to support those in our midst who are more vulnerable, especially during the pandemic as the need continues to grow. Please consider donating to these incredible organizations who directly help those in need.”

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Municipal Campground has temporarily been made available for monthly rentals to individuals or families living in their vehicles, to provide them with access to sanitation, services and supports, due to being under-housed. Further information about the campground temporary use is available at Squamish.ca/news.

Residents are asked to consider donating to any of Squamish’s vital social service organizations:
