Public invited to tour Operations Yard during ‘Public Works Week’ 2016

Ever wonder what happens after you flush the toilet? How does a fire hydrant work and why do they have different coloured tops? Residents are invited to take a closer look at the District of Squamish’s water and sewer monitoring system, heavy equipment, truck and vehicle fleet, and much more when the Operations Yard opens its doors for its public open house next Thursday, May 19 between 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. as part of National Public Works Week (NPWW). Guided tours will be available at 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

“Public Works Always There” is the theme of the 56th annual NPWW that will be celebrated in municipalities across Canada during the week of May 15 to 21, 2016.

“Whether we are aware or not, we are impacted every single day by the services that our Operations staff work round-the-clock to deliver,” says District of Squamish Mayor Patricia Heintzman. “Public Works Week is about raising that awareness and highlighting the collaborative efforts of our team to deliver these services. I invite all residents to explore first-hand how our community functions on a daily basis.”

The District of Squamish will once again host grade four students from across Squamish who will learn about all aspects of Public Works. The tour will take them through 12 interactive stations exploring everything from how to make a hanging flower basket, to a tour of the wastewater treatment plant, to learning about water conservation, and to getting up close and personal with the heavy equipment fleet.

About National Public Works Week

National Public Works Week (NPWW) is a community awareness, educational and outreach program endorsed by the Canadian Public Works Association, the American Public Works Association, and the Public Works Association of British Columbia. Across the nation, NPWW educates the public about the important contribution public works makes to their daily lives: planning, building, managing and operating the heart of our local community and enhancing our quality of life.
