High Streamflow and rainfall warning issued for Howe Sound

UPDATED: December 13

The River Forecast Centre is maintaining a High Streamflow Advisory for the South Coast and Vancouver Island including Howe Sound, the Stawamus River and tributaries along the Sea to Sky Highway.

A series of powerful Pacific storms continue to impact British Columbia. The second of these storms has delivered moderate rainfall across the region, with rainfall amounts in the 50-130 mm range being observed over the past 24 hours. Significant snowfall has occurred over higher terrain.

Rainfall is expected to continue through Thursday evening, and ease overnight and early on Friday before the next storm system arrives later on Friday. Temperatures are expected to rise over this period, however significant snow melt is not expected. Additional storm systems are expected to continue to impact south-west BC over the weekend and into next week.

Continued periods of high streamflow are expected on Thursday, Friday and through the weekend. Brief periods between storms will allow for river levels to ease during these gaps in heavy rainfall.

The River Forecast Centre will continue to monitor conditions and update this advisory as conditions warrant.

UPDATED: December 12

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Howe Sound. Heavy rain is forecast for tonight and Thursday with rainfall totals up to 60 millimetres.

A high streamflow advisory has also been issued for the South Coast, including Howe Sound, the Stawamus River and tributaries along the Sea-to-Sky Highway. A high streamflow advisory means that river levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly, but that no major flooding is expected. Minor flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Use extra caution and stay well back from river banks.

Moderately heavy rainfall is expected with this storm, along with a slight rise in temperatures. Over higher terrain, precipitation is expected to remain as snow, however mid-elevations (<1400m) may see minor melt of snow that has accumulated over the past day. An additional storm is expected to arrive later on Friday.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance. Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. More details on the alert are available here.
