Rainfall warning issued for Howe Sound

Issued at 2022-12-25 23:58 UTC by Environment Canada:
Rainfall warning issued for:    Howe Sound, B.C. (082500)

Current details:
A long episode of rain, at times heavy, is expected. The frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb this rainfall.

Two successive storms will bring 60 to 110 mm of rain by late Tuesday night. A break between the storms will occur Monday afternoon.

Where: Squamish, West Vancouver, North Vancouver, Port Moody, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Anmore, Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge

When:
Storm #1: Tonight and Monday morning
Storm #2: Monday night and Tuesday

Hazards:
- Localised flooding due to ice-clogged drains
- Water pooling on roads
- High river levels
- Potential for debris flows

Total rainfall amounts:
Squamish: 110 mm
All other communities: 60 to 80 mm

Remarks:
Two winter storms will bring heavy rain and strong winds to the south coast beginning tonight.

Rain will intensify overnight as the storm #1 approaches. It will pass through by mid-day on Monday, providing a brief reprieve from the heavy rain.

The second storm will arrive Monday evening and rain will intensify overnight. Rain, at times heavy, will continue through Tuesday and Tuesday night before abating.

Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance. Avoid driving through water on roads. Even shallow, fast-moving water across a road can sweep a vehicle or a person away. Don't approach washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts. Keep children and pets away from creeks and river banks.
