In dogs, as in people, fear is most often the catalyst to aggressive behavior. Is there any possibility this dog was either trained by its owner to keep people away, or abused by its owner?
Was it the intention of the Shelter to try to retrain Max to be less afraid, and able to be rehomed? Or was there a more drastic proposal? If the latter, perhaps do-gooders, wanting to save the life of this innocent animal, rescued it from a death sentence, for something it had been conditioned to do for its own protection.
It is easy to freak out about a dog being aggressive, but learning why it behaves that way is the first question needing answers, before anything radical is done.
I hope Max, wherever he is, is in loving hands and is being retrained to be less fearful and more accepting of good people.
