October 29, 2016: The District of Squamish has been informed by FortisBC of a release of naturally occurring gas that occurred on the Dike (Spit) Road as part of the FortisBC geotechnical investigation work.
Gas pockets of this nature are occasionally found when doing this type of work, especially in estuarine deposits. Please read the FortisBC statement for details.
As a safety precaution, the very south end of the Spit Road is being closed until further notice to allow for FortisBC crews to draw up a safe operating procedure to close the investigation site.
This investigation site was the last investigation site on the dike road.
The District thanks the public for your patience and cooperation.
