Oceanfront Peninsula water, sewer and storm utility infrastructure construction set to begin

The utilities that will service the Squamish Oceanfront Peninsula are being constructed this summer! The District of Squamish and Cornerstone Developments Ltd. are constructing water, sewer and storm utility infrastructure from Vancouver Street at Cleveland Avenue, down Galbraith Avenue.  This project involves constructing sewer and water mains on Vancouver Street and Galbraith Avenue as well as storm sewer mains along Galbraith Avenue.

The work is scheduled to begin August 7, 2018 and will continue through to December 31, 2018.

Impacts

Locals who frequent the area and visitors to the zone will need to be aware of a number of impacts as a result of the construction:

  • Work will take place from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Friday, with after-hours and weekends as required in accordance with applicable District of Squamish bylaws. Extended work hours help minimize traffic disruption and shorten construction time.
  • Dewatering due to the high water table will be required, and may result in a rotten egg odour that is often present in local groundwater. Regular water quality monitoring will be conducted by the project’s Qualified Environmental Professional to ensure that all receiving environments are protected.
  • Delays and increased traffic should be expected along the roads accessing the Peninsula, as well as single lane alternating traffic intermittently.

Traffic Management

Efforts are being made to manage traffic in the area for the safety of workers, road users and residents. Road users should anticipate delays and increased traffic specifically at the Loggers Lane/Vancouver Street intersection and on Galbraith Avenue down to the Oceanfront Park. Single alternating lane traffic can be expected intermittently through the duration of the project.
