Some of the most exciting moments of 2014 will soon be preserved for the next fifty years thanks to the District of Squamish 50th Anniversary Time Capsule to commemorate 50 years since the District’s Incorporation as well as 100 years of Squamish celebrations. The capsule will be buried at Pavilion Park on December 16 at 1 p.m.

Sea to Sky Gondola trail maps and media clippings, flags, back issues of local newspapers, Squamish Days Loggers Sports swag, an official Squamish Valley Music Festival poster, photographs, and the 'Celebrating Squamish Milestones' banner full of community messages are among the items to be included.

The burial ceremony will mark the end of a year-long 100 Years of Squamish celebration which recognized several significant milestones in the history of our town including 110 years since the Britannia Mine was initiated, 102 years of the Squamish (Newport) Fire Department, 57 years of Squamish Days Loggers Sports, 100 years since Newport became Squamish, 80 years of the Chamber of Commerce, and 50 years since the District of Squamish was incorporated.

Several community organizations and events incorporated Milestones programming and content into their activities and initiatives throughout the year, including the Squamish Historical Society, Downtown Business Improvement Association, Squamish Wind Festival, Squamish Public Library, Squamish Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Squamish, Squamish Valley Music Festival, Squamish Triathlon and Squamish Days Loggers Sports who hosted a special 100 Years of Squamish edition of the 57th annual event. The District's own Community Picnic officially commemorated the local government's 50 years when sister city Shimizu Town visited in August. Local media, including the Squamish Chief Newspaper and Mountain FM also got in the action with promotional and editorial support. Many more organizations and individuals helped celebrate the Milestones throughout the year.

The public is invited to submit materials for consideration to be included in the time capsule, which will not be opened until the year 2064. Submissions will be accepted based on size and space availability. Those interested are asked to include a brief description (and photo if available) by December 8 to communications@squamish.ca
